I see that Middelburg is exactly 96 miles- as the crow flies- and almost all ACROSS SEAWATER from the Orfordness Transmitting Station.

Grimsby is 123 miles - across land.
I am 157 miles away- across land.

That explains why Middelburg gets the best reception. But I prefer the Grimsby feed - as it fades and distorts- as I will always remember the original off shore stations doing where I was listening in the 60's.

Thanks for the exciting suggestion Alec. But I fear it is beyond my limitations!

The Mosquito is not for the beginner. It has a useful 1w output and a nice wide audio bandwidth (so I'm told) and can give good results if fed with well processed audio, but it has no antenna tuning capability. To get good results out of this unit, it must be connected to a carefully designed Antenna Tuning Unit or loading coil and antenna system.

For the beginner, the Spitfire (from the same stable) would be the better option. Only 100mw output, but iirc it has ATU capability built in. You can just use a 3m wire antenna (I think this is supplied). Range won't be great, but it will give a good signal around the house, garden and a bit further.

NB: Neither unit is legal to use in the UK, however the Spitfire is unlikely to attract any attention, unless you're daft enough to set it to, eg. 1215KHz and blitz out your neighbour's reception of Absolute. Not that I could possibly condone using an unlicenced Tx. of course.

As long as you are sensible when using these transmitters- I personally don't think EITHER would come to the attention of the investigation unit. By sensible- I mean making absolutely sure that the transmissions don't ‘break in’to a neighbours electrical equipment- like amplifiers etc. For example I don't see how anyone would be surprised to hear Big L on 1395 - even in the UK- because a simple check of the website and logo would carry the 1395 kHz message.

In the 70's we were living a couple of doors from a very enthusiastic CB user- whose reckless use of his CB equipment led to his signals ‘bleeding’all over our cartridge amplifier-so much so his regular calls would be all over our 45's!!!

I agree with you though Cookie about the far simpler Spitfire. The excitement of getting a signal ‘up and running’would Be just. As much a thrill to me as the more powerful Mosquito. After all- you have no means of knowing how many MORE-other than yourself- are ‘tuning in’ You could go to a lot of expense and trouble to get the more powerful tx inn action - and it would still have only one listener-you!! After all- how many people - other than us- listen to am radio anymore????
