Oh blimey! Now THAT'S a question! So many DJ's so short a day!

I would second M's opinion/list - but old fashioned as I am I would add an AM-outlet as well so that you can listen to it in your car all over Europe.
- but I know I am 'out of time' with my opinion

I'm slightly off topic in that I was asked to work out a programme on setting up a complete station abroad so here it is with a few adaptations for UK.

1] Factors to initial radio station set-up.
a/ Requirements---



Obtain a station name---short/catchy and applicable to your chosen format.
Complete business plan [ensuring all i's are dotted and t's crossed]
Start up cash plus one years estimated running costs, available.[Employ financial agent]
Geographical area to be covered with estimated TX power required.
Presentation of above sent to possible sponsors/investors and interested parties.


b/ The plunge---



Set up a main link studio-----you need to interact with your audience/staff.
Set up a website, set up a prepartory i-net radio site.
Obtain a frequency/Tx site/Tx [preferably legal]
Settle on a set format----possibly a fast paced oldies station based on the 252 adage of "never more than a minute away from music" [if something works then steal it and use it]
Now take the plunge and get a nucleus of volunteer DJ's with their own studio facilities [same as KBC and BigL]



c/ Advertise, advertise---



Advertise your start date by all available fair or foul means.
Everyone has a PC and printer nowadays so use your volunteers to print flyers/station business cards/ posters etc etc.
Open your web site and advertise the dates-----open the i-net radio with continuous loop of your chosen format but advertising the start up date.
Open up about 5 e-mail contact addresses and obtain a voip phone number[s][voip is cost proof---use vonage UK]
Get a vehicle with station logo, get supply of cheap giveaways such as keyfobs/pens/flyers etc and start visiting your coverage area, make yourself known, give out cheap advertising rates to the small business's-----get the cash flowing [it's hard but the money is there]
Remember it's actually better to get programme sponsorship than too many little adverts as these slow the pace of your programmes down.



2] The day has arrived---



Pre-check all----TX, website, i-net radio, DJ link-ups at least 6 hours prior to the start up.
Choose your main presenter carefully for the start up and rehearse with him until word perfect.
Use your largest programme sponsor for the starter. [It makes them happy and they keep paying]
Do not start up until 8am because contrary to belief no-one really absorbs much before then but will eagerly await a new station starting at 8am.



OK you have your station running, it's now up to you to keep it going.
Get volunteers to man the lines/answer e-mails and basically push the station.
Keep pounding the sponsors---keep the adverts/flyers going but remember you do have large running costs for the Tx etc so don't be compacent---KEEP YOUR BLOODY COSTS DOWN or the station and you will go down.



Please note that this is a very watered down version of a request from a previous client abroad {Spain] It worked and still does work although not on a legal frquency and I reproduce it here just for fun.
