I should imagine their mast would be pretty much undirected. It will be interesting to read the reception reports when they get going. I wonder how far the signal will get. Will it reach the shores of The Netherlands? Will it be detected in Hilversum? Utrecht? Maybe even Amsterdam?

Is anyone aware of other far more powerful transmitters on adjoining frequencies? Indeed-is anyone aware of any 'pirates' who have moved on to 648 kHz since we vacated it? How powerful are they?

Really its a case of 'sucking it and see'.

There is a pirate operating at times on 648 in eastern England but it relays the main Radio Caroline service it will cease when Radio Caroline fires up on the frequency.

Re. Orfordness and Tx.s. I don't think there's any requirement to use Aquiva (a private company). Clearly Caroline will have to be able to demonstrate their installation complies with the terms of their licence. Afik the old Orfordness Tx. was owned and operated by Babcock. Power was very high, but as has been said, that mast was extremely directional, beaming the signal away from the UK, with only an anorak signal reaching SE England. But that set-up has nothing to do with Caroline, only that the same Frequency was used.

Yes. I believe they have got their own transmitter- and that they have a transmitter site in Suffolk already lined up. They will need Planning Permission- unless they had already applied on the off chance ! That could take a while to come thro if not. Hope they will be able to get on the air by 14th.August. It would be tragic if they just missed it due to red tape.

Yes, the Tx. Site is on a farm in Suffolk. Peter Moore has said they have sourced a suitable transmitter and it's being configured for the frequency. Not sure on any planning permission status. The Tx. site was stated in their licence application. It may also be a pre-condition that the site has planning permission or existing capability, I don't know.

I wouldn't mind betting they'll be on air by Aug 14th. Maybe not at full power and not with the permanent antenna, but I reckon they'll have something up to give at least some coverage. That date is just too significant to miss!

I've got a screen capture of the exact location via Google Maps. Looks like its in the middle of a field-not far from some out-buildings . Stowmarket isnt too far away either. With a bit f luck we may get a signal up here in n.e. Derbyshire.
I've done an 'as the crow flies' calculation- and it is 138 miles from here.

Wonder if the Manx government would give them an am licence somewhere on the I-o-M ? Not sure if they have any available frequencies anyway.

But-on that subject- does anyone think that Caroline (or Big L for that matter) could apply for similar low-power am licences elsewhere throughout the UK?

What about Radio Scotland? (Remember them?) Would they give them one for a Scottish location? And if Scotland becomes independent- would Nicola Sturgeon want to go down that route?

Incidentally- I was wondering whether the T/x site in that field could have a big poster of the Ross next to the mast? But then I thought- poor farmer- would probably have a constant stream of anoraks visiting his farm!

Wellies as well! But I suppose if you are 'anorak enough' - you'd still wade through to get your photo taken next to the T/x and mast!!!
